CBM Profile

Christian Books Melanesia (CBM) is a publishing and distribution ministry serving the people of Papua New Guinea. Since its registration in 1973, CBM has grown into the largest Christian publisher in the country. As such, it takes seriously the responsibility of providing quality Christian literature at the most affordable rates. CBM's head office is located in Wewak. Bookshops can be visited in Wewak, Mt. Hagen, Aitape, Vanimo, Madang, and Lae warehouse. CBM employs 56 staff (3 missionaries), and is governed by 9 Board of Directors.

Objectives

  • To publish and distribute Christian Books within Papua New Guinea; to bring its peoples to a vital saving faith in Jesus Christ as Lord; to build up and establish Christian believers in their faith; and to assist in the growth and development of the churches.
  • To publish books that develop Biblical standards of morality, growth in Christian maturity, encouragement of Bible study, witnessing, and serving God.
  • To produce literacy materials designed to produce a literate nation.
  • To train indigenous staff at all levels to ensure the on-going ministry of the organisation.
History

Christian Books Melanesia, Inc. developed out of the need for Christian books and resources in both simple English and Tok Pisin.

In early 1969, the CMML mission group acting for the Christian Brethren Church (CBC), invited Les Marsh to use his 16 years of publishing experience to set up a Christian bookshop in Wewak.

A number of CBC missionaries contributed to literacy and resource material. In 1970, the Wewak Bookshop published 10,000 sets of Pidgin Primers and 1000 Teachers Guides. These were the first of the Kisim Save series.

1972 saw the culmination of this important literature work into the organisation now known as Christian Books Melanesia, Inc.

The writing, publishing, and marketing of Christian books remains an ongoing vision in Papua New Guinea and provides a flow of Biblical materials for many evangelical and other church groups throughout the country.
